There’s so much to love about the Golden Retriever. Their laidback and friendly personalities make them amazing pets for all types of families. They’re especially fond of young children, and will never back down from a fun play session. Despite their decades-long popularity as a favorite breed in the United States, there’s still a lot to learn about Golden Retrievers.

Read on and test your knowledge about this wonderful breed. You never know what you may learn about the Golden Retriever in your neighborhood!

1. Golden Retrievers come in threes.

Golden Retrievers have a signature golden coat that’s sure to turn a few heads. But did you know that their beautiful fur can come in three different coat colors? It’s hard to tell at first, but Golden Retriever coats come in three distinct shades: golden, light golden, and dark golden.

Goldens can also be divided into three types: English, Canadian, and American. And these pooches also have key differences that make them unique.

English Golden Retrievers, for instance, have a stockier build than their Canadian and American cousins. They also tend to have a light golden coat. As with Canadian and American Golden Retrievers, both cousins look identical but with one notable difference: Canadians have a much thinner coat.

2. Goldens are star athletes.

Laidback and calm, you may assume the Golden Retriever is a couch potato. They do make great cuddle buddies but Goldens prefer to test out their athletic ability. Many sporting breeds love to run, walk, play games, and do other fun activities—Goldens are no different! Their muscular bodies give them the ability to perform strenuous exercises like long-distance fetch and endurance running. Golden Retrievers are super outgoing and active so it’s important for their owners to meet their physical needs on a regular basis.

3. Golden Retrievers love water.

Many dogs aren’t exactly fans of water. They may not enjoy getting wet or associate water with bathtime. Golden Retrievers are an exception to this common canine trait! Goldens love water, and especially swimming. Their athletic build and energetic nature make this breed a perfect partner for all kinds of water games and sports. Just make sure the water is clean and safe for your Golden to swim in!

4. Golden Retrievers are very family-oriented dogs.

Saying that Golden Retrievers love their families is an understatement. If you own a Golden Retriever, you will forever have an affectionate companion by your side. Goldens see their loved ones as members of their “pack,” and will always be loyal to them, no matter what. Their friendliness also extends to other people and pets. You will rarely see a Golden that’s aggressive towards others.

5. Goldens are super easy to train.

Golden Retrievers are often featured in TV shows and movies. The reason for this is simple: Goldens are incredibly easy to train! These beautiful dogs are intelligent and eager to please, so training is usually a breeze with them. Goldens also feel a strong loyalty towards their owners, which keeps them from being stubborn or exhibiting aggressive behavior. Like all dogs, make sure to socialize your Golden Retriever puppy early and use positive training.

Golden Retrievers are such amazing dogs. Remember to note that this breed is high-energy and active so they need constant activity to prevent boredom. Their kind and loyal nature will definitely win over your heart. With the right family, they can thrive and be their happy, goofy selves!
