Puppies are just like us—they need sleep, food, play time, and exercise to live a happy life! Although puppies do not need as much exercise as adult dogs, they still need physical activity to keep fit and active. Generally, your puppy should exercise for at least 3 separate sessions a day with some breaks in between.

If your puppy is young, you should keep any form of exercises to a minimum. This can include walking for a short distance and quick playtime sessions. If your puppy is much older, you can implement more rigorous exercises throughout their day.

Here are 5 fun exercises your puppy will appreciate:

1. Long distance walking

Walking is an amazing exercise for puppies, especially for long distances. It’s the kind of activity that stimulates them physically by having their muscles on the move. It also provides them with mental stimulation as they take in their surroundings. The sight of people, the smell of flowers, and the noises of the outside world will keep your puppy thoroughly entertained. On top of this, walking for long distances may also give them the opportunity to meet new people and socialize. All of these factors are the right ingredients for a healthy, well-mannered pooch.

2. Swimming

Puppies are just as great in water as they are on land! Swimming can be a powerful and fun form of exercise for your furry cutie. Whether it’s in a pool or a beach, your puppy constant use of their legs will allow them to use up their pent-up energy. We always recommend having your puppy wear a swim vest or life jacket, just in case. Avoid leaving your puppy alone in the water, especially on the beach. You should also carry water for your puppy after a swim!

3. Agility

What’s great about agility is that it provides your puppy with physical and mental stimulation. You can train your puppy to walk through tunnels, climb on ladders, and of course, jump through hoops. Through agility lessons, you can form strong bonds with your puppy as well. You may also notice that your lovable pooch is more confident and trusting of you after an agility class!

4. Running

If you want your puppy to really let out all of their energy, running is the best exercise to start! When your puppy runs, there’s usually no stopping them. You can choose to run with your puppy or play in short sessions that involve this activity. Just make sure the weather outside isn’t too hot. Always provide your puppy with some fresh drinking water so they remain healthy and hydrated.

5. Puppy games

Tug-of-war, hide-and-seek, fetch—these are all fun puppy games that count towards great exercise. Your puppy will love having any chance to spend time with you so consider playing a fun game with them! You can also try mental games like Kong toys and scavenger hunts to encourage your puppy to use their brain juice. Always look for an opportunity to challenge your puppy.

Exercise requires much of your time and effort, but fortunately, making it a habit will help you and your puppy grow accustomed to this routine. Never over-exercise your puppy as it can cause their joints and bones to hurt. You should also choose each exercise according to the breed, age and size of your furbaby before they perform it. We hope you and your puppy have a wonderful workout time!
