“New year, new me” is the typical motto that comes with every New Year’s celebration. For some, it means starting a new hobby. For others, it’s creating a list of life-changing goals to follow throughout the year. Whether or not you follow these traditions, it’s important to change up your puppy’s usual routine for the new year. This gives your puppy a chance to have a fresh start! If you aren’t sure what goals to set for your furry friend, take a look at our list of 10 New Year’s resolutions:

1. Check your pup’s food.

The best way to start the new year is to eat right! Your puppy’s growth development is dependent on the food they eat. It’s extremely important to ensure that your puppy’s food is nutritionally balanced so that their bodies remain well-nourished. Always check the labels in dog food bags to make sure your pup eats the right food for their size and age.

If your puppy begs for table scraps, do not give in to their pleas. Use a measuring cup to avoid overfeeding your puppy. You can always ask your vet if you aren’t sure about the appropriate amount for your four-legged friend.

2. Focus on your puppy’s teeth.

Your puppy’s teeth are an important part of their body—without them, your fur-baby wouldn’t be able to eat or chew! That’s why it’s highly important to brush their teeth on a regular basis. Tooth brushing helps eliminate any plaque and tartar from your pup’s mouth, and prevent dental diseases. Your puppy can walk into the new year with a fresh breath and clean teeth!

Just make sure to slowly introduce your four-legged friend to their toothbrush. You should also schedule annual dental checkups to further evaluate the health of your pup’s teeth.

3. Change exercises regularly.

Walks are a fun activity to do with your puppy, but we recommend changing it up for the new year. Some fun exercises for puppies include agility training, puppy playtime, and games.

If you love the outdoors, bring your furry friend on your next hiking trek or swimming adventure. You can also try meeting with other owners and invite them on a puppy playdate. Getting into the habit of exercising is a surefire way to lose weight and develop your friendship with your pup!

4. Upgrade your puppy’s items.

Does your puppy’s bed give off a smell? Is your puppy’s favorite toy chewed up? If so, it’s time to head to your nearest Petland. Just create a checklist of all your puppy’s must-have items before giving us a visit! Your list must contain items you need like bedding, food and water bowls, toys, and more. Our stores have all the puppy supplies that your furry friend will definitely appreciate.

5. Go on regular vet visits.

One of the most important resolutions is to visit the vet on a regular basis. Through a physical assessment, you will know whether your puppy is healthy. Your vet will also let you know of any potential diseases or conditions your four-legged friend may develop that you can prevent. On top of this, you can address any questions and concerns about your puppy to your vet and receive an educated answer.

The new year often symbolizes a time for self-improvement, at least for most people. It gives others a chance to change their lives for the better. It’s these key traits of New Year’s celebrations that give puppy owners the push to improve their puppy’s lives. By setting the right goals (and actually following them), you and your puppy can live a happy life together!
