In this article, you’ll learn how training your puppy is the most effective means of fostering the bond between you two, and you’ll discover fun ways to train your puppy that will seem like playing!
Having a puppy can be a blast. Each new day brings new experiences for your puppy, and he’ll learn from every experience and encounter he has with other people and animals. As part of his development, you also need to teach him basic commands and make sure that he learns how to behave himself as he interacts with other puppies, dogs, people, and children. This is all part of his socialization.
Training your puppy to know commands will help him during future encounters. Your puppy will love bonding with you at home. If your puppy already knows all the basic commands and can reliably obey them, try teaching him a complex command that requires more self-control, such as “leave it.”
Whether or not you train your puppy at home to know basic commands, another great bonding experience that your puppy will love is attending professional puppy training classes, which we’ll go over in the next section.
Taking your new puppy to professional puppy training classes can be a wonderful bonding experience for you and your pup. There are two kinds of dog training programs out there. The kind where the dog is left one-on-one with a professional dog trainer, and the other kind is where the dog owner remains with their dog so that the professional trainer essentially trains the owner and dog at the same time.
The latter type of dog training course, where the owner participates with their dog, is an excellent bonding experience to strengthen the relationship between dog and owner. These classes are focused on puppy training and cover the basics. And it gets even better. These classes are group classes where your puppy will be exposed to other puppies and their owners. This added layer of socialization can enrich your puppy’s development.
Typically, puppy training courses of this nature have a fixed number of classes and you pay for the entire course. Generally, a puppy training course is 6 weeks long, but you may find courses out there that are longer or shorter depending on the curriculum that’s being offered.

Whether or not you take your new puppy to a professional puppy training course to both train him and bond with him, you can bond with him at home by training your puppy to perform more complex commands. Read on to learn more.
If your puppy belongs to a working breed or sporting breed, he’ll be keen to tackle a complex task. Working dog breeds are capable of herding cattle, checking the grand perimeter of a ranch to make sure there are no intruders, and driving a flock of chickens safely into their coop!
You might not live on a farm, but you can definitely trust your puppy has the genetics to handle a big job if you need him to. This will take some pre-planning and prior training, but once your puppy knows the basics of a larger or complex task, you can have him accomplish the task whenever you discover he’s bored.
It’s important that new puppy parents do not mistake boundary testing for a refusal to learn. If anything, when your new puppy “tests” the boundaries you’re trying to set, this is an opportunity to bond with him! Never give up on maintaining the rules and training your puppy. When your puppy tests the boundaries, he isn’t suggesting that the boundary shouldn’t be there. He’s simply trying to find out how important the boundary is, and what will happen if he violates the boundary. This is natural for him to do. Canines in the wild do this, too, and fights will result. But the fights are controlled and the wolves, foxes, or prairie dogs, etc. won’t seriously injure the dissenter in order to maintain boundaries.
In your home, there is no need to “fight.” Simply maintain the boundary. For example, if one of your house rules is that there is no begging for food during your family’s meal times, then obviously no one at the table should break this rule, because doing so will only incentivize your puppy to try to break the rule, too. Equally important is to use a command if your puppy begins to beg, such as “go lie down.” If your puppy refuses, then a negative reinforcement would be in order, such as giving him a time out in his crate.
Setting and maintaining boundaries with your puppy is an important aspect of his socialization and development. So, don’t be afraid to be firm and consistent, and just know that your puppy doesn’t want you to cave. He only wants to learn your rules so that he can please you!
