The best way to your puppy’s heart is through food. We all know it—when a puppy catches a whiff of delicious treats, you know their attention has been captured. Like people, dogs have an insatiable appetite. If it were up to them, dogs would munch on snacks every day. It’s for this reason that we recommend using dog treats as positive rewards during training or playtime.

With so many choices available, however, how do you know what treats are healthy for your furry bestie? Well, one useful tip is to look at the ingredients. As with your puppy’s food, their treats should be well-balanced and yummy. Of course, if you aren’t sure where to begin, here are a few ways that can help you pick out the healthiest treats that’ll leave your puppy’s mouth watering!

1. Make sure your puppy’s treats have natural ingredients.

When shopping for your puppy’s treats, check the ingredients label in the back. Your dog’s treat should contain natural, organic ingredients. The more natural the ingredients, the less likely they’ll have any kind of chemical or artificial additives that can harm your puppy. Make sure your puppy’s treats have the following ingredients:

  • Vitamin C and E
  • Molasses
  • Vegetable glycerin
  • Calcium
  • Phosphorous
  • Protein

You should also check what foods are listed at the beginning of the ingredients. Remember: the sooner an ingredient appears, the more of it your dog’s treats have.

2. Avoid treats with artificial or unhealthy ingredients.

Your puppy’s treats shouldn’t contain a lot of sugar, salt, or fat. These ingredients promote an unhealthy diet, leading to several health issues such as obesity and diabetes. We also recommend to avoid giving your puppy treats that have chemical additives, sweeteners, and artificial colors. Although these ingredients are delicious to your puppy, they can actually make your puppy very sick. If your furry friends treats have an endless list of ingredients you can’t pronounce, don’t bother buying it.

3. Your puppy’s treats should be low in calories.

When it comes to dog treats, most veterinarians recommend that puppies get no more than about 10% of their daily calories from treats. You can use treats that are low in calories to quench your puppy’s hunger until it’s their mealtime. If you’re training your furry bestie, treats also help prevent your pup from losing their appetite. Ask your vet for more information about your puppy’s caloric intake.

4. Take note of your puppy’s allergies or other conditions.

Your puppy may have food allergies or sensitivities that can make them sick. Ask your vet about any possible food allergies your puppy may have. This will help you choose the best treats for your puppy during shopping trips. It helps to keep track of foods that can be toxic. If you decide to give human food as treats to your furry friend, make sure it isn’t detrimental to their health like onions, grapes, and chocolate.

5. Try to make dog treats yourself.

To best ensure your puppy eats a healthy treat, bake some yummy treats for them! There are numerous recipes that are both nutrition-balance and low in calories. Of course, be sure the ingredients in the recipes are safe for puppies to eat. You can also give your puppy “safe human foods” like peanut butter, plain yogurt, and popcorn (it must be unsalted and unbuttered before eating!). Note: Remember that with peanut butter and other safe human foods, make sure that it doesn’t contain xylitol, a sugar substitute that can be extremely toxic to dogs.

Never allow your puppy to eat treats before a meal as this can cause them to lose their appetite. Now, choosing treats for your puppy shouldn’t be too complicated. When you take a few moments of your day to pick out yummy and healthy treats, you ensure that your puppy is safe and sound!
