When you bring your puppy home, you may want to consider puppy-proofing your home and backyard. Your backyard seems looks safe and secure, but your pup may face a number of hazards. The following is a list of possible obstacles you will need to watch out for when your furry friend ventures outside. This checklist can also apply to other pets, like cats, rabbits, and other small animals.

1. Pick non-toxic plants for your garden

If you are an avid gardener, you know that flower gardens can add a colorful flair to your backyard. Unfortunately, some flowers can be quite toxic to your cuddly puppy, such as tulips, daffodils, and other popular plants. You can check with your vet to see which plants are safe for your furry cutie to sniff and lick. Do not let your puppy roam the garden unsupervised before you do this!

2. Secure trash cans and bags

Trash cans and recycling bins can contain substances and objects that are harmful to your furry companion. To prevent any accidents, make sure these containers are sealed with appropriate lids and tops. You should never leave bags or bins with cleaning supplies, sprays, or antifreeze around your pet. These substances, such as antifreeze can be fatal to pets, so keep them out of reach! This rule also applies to bug sprays, rat bait, and other herbicides.

3. Check that your fence is secure

Your backyard may feel safer with a fence around it. A mischievous puppy may find a way to get through it by slipping through holes or gaps. Make sure your fence is secure without any holes, gaps, or areas they can get through.

4. Cut grass and maintain landscape

Ticks and fleas often use tall grass and branches for the opportunity to crawl into your fur-baby’s skin! You can prevent these pests from getting on your pup by trimming your grass regularly and cleaning to remove debris. We also recommend using flea and tick prevention methods like flea-killing shampoo on your pets before letting them out!

5. Clean shed, deck, and other backyard structures

Fleas thrive in dark, humid areas that decks, sheds, and dog homes provide. Bees may also construct their homes in your backyard’s structures. Sweeping your patios and cleaning debris off your shed and deck will stop these critters from picking your home as theirs.

6. Do not let your pup near grass with pesticides

We know the insecticides help with bug problems, but sometimes, it can make your pup sick. Avoid using these chemicals or consult your vet for advice on the best course of action. Do not let your pet near lawns that have been sprayed with insecticides or fertilizers as this can be dangerous.

Keep in mind that you should also keep your pup’s ID tag in check. Anything can happen outside your backyard and if your pup escapes, this increases the chances of your puppy being found.
