Summer is the best time of the year for long walks by the beach and enjoying the outdoors with best friends! But while we can use sunscreen and shades to stay away from the dangerous sun, your pup is still being exposed to the overwhelming heat! So here are some tips on how to help keep your puppy cool!

Always take fresh water on walks.

Keeping your puppy hydrated is essential on hot days. This is why it is vital to always carry a cold-water bottle along when taking walks or while doing any outdoor activities. Make sure to take breaks in shady areas to avoid your puppy from panting or experiencing a heat stroke.

Have your dog’s fur groomed.

Summer time means new hairstyle. A puppy’s undercoat is part of their natural cooling system, but if not properly groomed it can prevent airflow across your fur-baby’s skin. Keep in mind to not fully remove their coat since their bare skin could burn in the sun.

Cold treats, please!

Chilled or frozen treats are a great refreshing surprise for your puppy! Just like we snack on ice-cream to stay cool, they can too!

Check the temperature before heading outside!

Try to stick to morning and evening walks when the weather isn’t too hot. Choose shaded routes where the pavement will not be hot and hurt your puppy’s paws. If your puppy stays outside, make sure to provide a covered space for them to take a break from the heat.

Protect your dog from sunburn.

Sunburn is common on puppies during the summer months. Make sure to check with your vet if you are unsure of which sunscreen you can use on your pup! You should apply dog friendly sunscreen to their nose, ears, belly, and legs.

Water fun in the sun!

Getting a small splash pool for your pup is a great way to stay hydrated during the summer days while still having some fun!
