February is Responsible Pet Owner Month, so it’s the perfect time to polish up on your pet ownership abilities! Many pet owners underestimate owning a pet—it involves not only cleaning and feeding them, but also a lifetime of love and attention. A responsible pet owner ensures their pet is always happy and loved so that you both have a mutually beneficial relationship.

While there isn’t a complete set of guidelines on good pet ownership, you can use the following tips to help your pet feel appreciated!

1. Pet proof your house.

When your pet is finally home, they will likely be curious about their surroundings. They may venture into the kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms to learn about their new home.

It’s essential for all puppy parents to pet proof their house. Search through your cabinets for toxic products and foods and keep them out of your pet’s reach. Check that all doors are closed before letting your pet explore. Make sure your backyard is pesticide-free and that your fence is escape-proof.

2. Give your pet the care they need.

Your pet may act independent but they depend on you for their happiness. As their owner, you are responsible for providing them with care and attention at all times.

To have a better idea of your pet’s health, you may watch out for some telltale signs in your pet’s behavior. We always recommend taking preventative measures like:

  • Vet visits. You should never skip a vet appointment, even if your pet pouts. A licensed veterinarian can provide your pet with a thorough physical exam that gives you insight on their health status. If it’s your pet’s first vet visit, read our blog, Your Puppy’s First Vet Visit to see what you can expect.
  • Vaccinations and parasite control. During vet visits, your vet will likely suggest vaccinating your pet, especially if you own a dog or cat. Vaccines are a great source of protection against various serious illnesses. Deworming and other preventative methods also lower your pet’s risk of parasites, which can make your pet very sick.
  • Pet insurance. Sudden emergencies can happen at any moment. You can prepare yourself and your pet with pet insurance. Getting insured helps your pet receive the medical attention they need, regardless of cost.

3. Always keep an ID on your pet.

If your pet escapes from the yard or runs out the door after it’s opened, a microchip and ID tag will help ensure they come back home. An ID tag can also provide information on health issues your pet may suffer from so that they’re handled with care when they’re found.

At Petland, we microchip all puppies and activate during purchase. All contact information should be updated on the database regularly so that your pet is properly identified.

4. Train your pet to follow commands.

If you want to raise a well-mannered pet, training should be your first priority. Puppies, for instance, can be taught basic commands the moment you bring them home.

Commands like “sit” and “stay” are not just party tricks; they can establish an understanding between you and your pet. It lets your pet know that you’re the leader of your home, making it easier to obey you.

5. Exercise your pet as often as you can.

Many pets need exercise to thrive. Exercise gives pets the amount of activity they need to be fit and healthy. And as a bonus, it reduces your pet’s boredom, which can manifest as bad behaviors

Your pet doesn’t need to run marathons to be fit. Instead, you can play fun games or take them to a dog park on a daily basis. You may even include your furry friend in your exercise routine!

6. Feed your pet a proper, nutritious meal.

Along with exercise, your pet needs a well-balanced, nutritious meal to be healthy. If your pet begs at the dinner table, ignore their pleas every chance you get. Start by choosing the right food for your furry friend, checking for toxic or unhealthy ingredients.

Your pet’s food should closely match their size, age, and activity level. Your vet and our pet counselors can give you expert advice on what your pet should eat.

7. Spay and neuter your pet.

Spaying and neutering can ensure your pet’s health and happiness for a long time. Apart from preventing unwanted litters, your pet is less likely to contract diseases like:

  • Mammary tumors (breast cancer)
  • Uterine infections
  • Testicular cancer
  • Prostate problems

Spaying and neutering can also reduce aggressive behavior in male and female dogs. However, neither procedure should be considered a solution to your pet’s bad habits, if they have any.

8. Love your pet.

Without question, your pet adores you with all their heart. You are their favorite person in the world. Sometimes, they may even show you through their quirky body language just how much they love you.

Return their love the best way you can. Give them kisses. Cuddle with them on the couch. Feed them a yummy treat every once in a while. Take your pet on adventures around your city. Whichever activity you pick, your pet will never complain!

Your pet is a responsibility, not a toy. Most people don’t realize the effort that goes behind raising a pet in their home. Pets need our attention, love, and care to be happy. It’s highly important to evaluate your lifestyle and other factors before bringing a pet into your life. When you’ve decided you’re ready for a pet, be ready for a cuddly lifelong friend!
