Does your puppy like to make a mess in your home when you come home? Does your puppy seem a little high-energy at times? If so, there’s a chance that it’s completely normal for your puppy’s breed and age. Restlessness or high energy is a common trait in puppies and various breeds, especially athletic dog breeds like Golden Retrievers and Australian Shepherds. As mentioned in GoodRx Health, some dog breeds have a naturally high-energy personality because of their background of origin. For example, the German Shepherd was once bred to herd sheep and protect them from any predators. As such, these dogs needed tons of energy to be able to perform their everyday tasks. These dogs were hardly considered pets and even today, German Shepherds work as police dogs, sight dogs, and therapy dogs. You may notice a similar background and pattern for other high-energy breeds like the Golden Retriever, the Labrador Retriever, and Australian Shepherds.

Even after these dog breeds adapted to becoming loving companions for humans, they still retained the high-energy traits that made them great hunters and herders. And unfortunately, unless your puppy is not a high-energy breed, there’s a chance your dog’s energetic personality won’t fade away. Therefore, you need to be creative in your approach so that your furry friend is always occupied. That way they won’t find a “job” to do while you’re away from home, leaving your house a mess.

Here are some of the best tips to use to tire out your high-energy puppy.

1. Take regular trips to the dog park.

For your high-energy puppy, taking walks on a regular basis isn’t enough. The reason why is simple: there just isn’t a lot of stimulation happening. Yes, they’ll see some birds and maybe the occasional neighbor but high-energy puppies usually want more. Your best solution? A trip to the dog park. Dog parks are the perfect place for puppies to run and play, make new friends, and experience the sights, smells, and sounds they want. Once you come home, you likely won’t need to play or hang out with your fur-baby—they’ll be snoozing away!

2. Take them to a dog daycare facility.

There are plenty of dog daycare centers available that take care of your puppy as you go about your day. Dog daycare centers are great because they provide your puppy with social interaction and stimulation. This keeps them busy and active, and by the time you’re ready to take them home, they’re too tired to complain. Build a consistent schedule to bring your fur-baby to the daycare center and you’ll find your puppy catching some z’s each day.

3. Play fun puppy games.

Many puppies love playing games just as much as they love to eat. Whether it’s fetching, Kong toys, or puzzle games, chances are there’s one fun game your puppy will love to play for hours. There are numerous ways to engage your puppy in playtime but we highly recommend playing physically active games like tug-of-war and fetch. Apart from their fun factor, they’re also quite challenging, which helps your friend use up their pent-up energy. Other games you can play include scavenger hunts, obstacle courses, and puzzle games—all of which are mentally stimulating.

4. Go on hikes and other adventures.

Many high-energy breeds inherited their energy from their hunting and herding ancestors. That’s why when you keep your puppy caged up in your house for a long time, they’ll get very bored. Boredom is the first ingredient for destructive, restless behavior and so, you need to give your puppy that stimulation they ask for. Hiking is probably the most physically demanding activity on this list. It’s a great activity to bond with your puppy and take in the different sights and sounds along the way. Your furry friend will enjoy smelling the scent of the trees, hearing wild animals, and seeing the different plants and locations you both venture into. The mental and physical stimulation is enough to keep your puppy placated. By the end of your hiking trip, your fur-baby will be ready to take a long nap! You can learn more about different hiking trails near you by checking out the app AllTrails.

5. Spend the day at the beach together.

Going to the beach is another physically demanding activity that provides your puppy with a change of scenery (and pace!). The beach is full of various sights, sounds, and scents so your puppy will have no problem joining in on the fun. Play fetch with your puppy on the sandy shore, meet other pet parents walking their dogs, or splash around together in the water. Regardless of what activity you do at the beach, you and your pup will surely have a fun time. Just remember to keep a close watch on your puppy whenever they go into the water.
