Highly affectionate and great with children, the French Bulldog is a companion, purebred dog breed that you’ll love forever!

In this blog post, we’ll go over the key traits and temperament of the French Bulldog, along with other characteristics that this lovable and unique breed is known for.

FRENCH BULLDOG APPEARANCE

The French Bulldog is most easily recognized by its large “bat ears.” Thanks to this dog’s even temperament and small size, the French Bulldog has become one of the most popular purebred dog breeds among apartment dwellers who live in cities.

Frenchies have short hair and don’t require too much grooming since they aren’t prone to seasonal shedding. No more than a weekly brushing will do it for the French Bulldog. This can be done easily by patting and stroking your Frenchie with a grooming mitt during snuggle time.

French Bulldogs tend to have quickly-growing nails. So, while they’re considered low-maintenance in general, you’ll have to stay on top of trimming your Frenchie’s nails. Depending on your own personal willingness and skill to trim your French Bulldog’s nails when necessary, you may opt to regularly take him to see a dog groomer for this specific reasons.

PERSONALITY OF THE FRENCH BULLDOG

Commonly referred to as the “Frenchie,” the French Bulldog has a playful, alert, and adaptable personality that makes it a great addition to households that already have dogs or other domestic pets.

As far as personalities go, Frenchies are bright, cheerful, and affectionate. Some might even say that their Frenchies have a way of charming them!

Though alert, inquisitive dogs, this breed will not bark unless it’s absolutely necessary. In this sense, Frenchies make reliable watch dogs, but don’t expect them to actually do much if there’s an intruder. Other than barking to let you know a stranger has barged in, they probably won’t make much more of a fuss about it!

EXERCISE REQUIREMENTS

French Bulldogs, as a breed, do not require a lot of outdoor exercise. In fact, they can’t handle too much exercise at all. A leisurely walk around the block followed by basking in the sunshine will do it for this cuddly dog breed.

This means that if you’re athletic and have expectations of exercising with your dog, the French Bulldog may not be for you. In this case, Petland Texas would recommend you get a Golden Retriever or Border Collie to jog with… and also get a French Bulldog to snuggle with, you just should leave your Frenchie at home while you sprint around the park with your high-energy, athletic dog!

HISTORY

Often described as “a clown in the cloak of a philosopher,” the French Bulldog originated, and continues to be used, as a companion dog. The breed is small and muscular with a heavy bone structure, smooth coat, short face and trademark “bat” ears. Prized for its affectionate nature and even disposition, the French Bulldog is generally active and alert, but not unduly boisterous.

Lacemakers in 19th Century Nottingham, England selectively bred the early bulldog to obtain a downsized or “toy” bulldog for use as a lap pet. When the Industrial Revolution displaced some lacemakers to France, they took the dogs with them, and soon the “toy” bulldogs became popular in France, where wealthy Americans doing the Grand Tour saw and fell in love with them. In the late 1800s, these “toy bulldogs” became known as French Bulldogs.

TRAINING

It’s undeniable that French Bulldog’s are affectionate, cuddly, and happiest by your side. But the other side of the coin is that this breed has a “big personality.” If left untrained and unchecked, the big personality of the French Bulldog could become unruly when adulthood begins.

No matter what breed of dog, it’s important to take the time and make the effort to properly train a dog during puppyhood, which typically lasts 8 months. Frenchies are no exception. With consistent training, your Frenchie puppy will quickly become a well-behaved companion.

Since French Bulldogs are intelligent and are “people pleasers” by nature, you’ll notice that your Frenchie puppy learns quickly during the puppy training process. This can be expedited by using treats, positive reinforcement methods, and game-based training.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

Due to the stocky physique of the French Bulldogs and their flat faces, this breed cannot swim and should never be left unsupervised around water. They are likely to drown if they’re alone and fall into a pool or body of water that is “over their head.” If you wish to bring your Frenchie to the beach, near a pool, or to the ocean, you will have to keep a close eye on him, and maybe even keep him on a leash for his own safety.

Another special consideration to bear in mind with your French Bulldog is that this breed is prone to having some degree of breathing difficulty in especially hot or humid weather. This is due, again, to their flat faces and small chests.
